Less than 5-10% of all low back pain is caused by significant underlying nerve compression or a serious problem. The remaining 90-95% have no signs of a serious cause and can be managed with conservative treatments such as physical therapy, advice, reassurance, exercise, cognitive, psychosocial therapy, and pain management.
Physiotherapy evaluation aims to identify causes that may contribute to the starting of pain or increase the risk of chronic pain. These may be biological factors (e.g., overweight, weakness, stiffness), psychological factors (e.g., depression, anxiety, kinetophobia and disaster), social factors (e.g. work environment), age, sedentary lifestyle, sleep, posture disorders (e.g. head-forward working position in computer a for a long time).
Clinical history and selected specific tests for pain can help differentiate between nonspecific pain and more serious low back pain.
The aim of physiotherapy and rehabilitation for patients’ pain complaints is to determine the type of pain first and then to maximize the quality of life by reducing the pain with psychosocial and selected manual therapy methods and eliminating the factors that cause pain. Here, of course, the physiotherapist-patient relationship is also very important. Two of the most important factors are to organize the person’s daily life and to do the necessary exercises so that the pain does not come back again.
